Sylvia Myers, Springwood Elementary School, Named Leon County Schools March Principal of the Month

A surprised and extremely gracious, Sylvia Myers, Springwood Elementary School Principal, was announced as the March Leon County Schools Principal of the Month on Wednesday, March 9 by Superintendent Rocky Hanna during the monthly Principals Meeting at the Howell Center. This announcement comes after Principal Myers organized the first-annual Writing Conference for the fourth and fifth-grade students at Springwood Elementary School who are preparing to take the writing FSA in April.

In preparation, Principal Myers said, “We wanted to do something really fun to remind the students of some of the conventions, how to elaborate, inferences, and all the skillsets needed to exceed in April.”

Principal Myers pulled out all of the stops to ensure the students felt like they were attending a real Writing Conference. The students received lanyards upon check-in, received swag bags with notebooks and information on the conference schedule, registered for their conference, as well as received a hot breakfast with grits, waffles, and turkey.

“We wanted to have a keynote speaker just as you would at a normal conference,” said Principal Myers. The speaker was Mrs. Lanetra Bennet, News Reporter at WCTV-TV, and she spoke to the students about her experiences with writing and how writing has helped in her career. After the keynote speaker, the students attended writing sessions with fourth and fifth-grade teachers.

“It was a really wonderful day for our students and we’re incredibly excited how it turned out,” said Principal Myers.

Principal Myers serves her school community of more than 560 students grades K-5 with a keen eye for student success. Principal Myers thanked her teachers, faculty, staff, parents for their unwavering support.

With 29 principals honored to date through the Scott & Wallace sponsorship, Leon County Schools Superintendent Hanna selects a monthly winner based on numerous criteria, including leadership, resiliency, morale, school beautification, and more.

“Our Leon County Principals spend so much time building others up, the Principal of the Month Award came about as our opportunity at the district level, to build the Principals up and recognize achievements, because there are many,” said Superintendent Hanna.
