Local elementary school, Kate Sullivan, is taking effective teaching to another level by launching The Positive Behavior Support Program, aimed to reinforce what students are doing right rather than concentrating on what students are doing wrong. Local attorneys, Scott & Wallace, announced this week the firm is sponsoring the program with a $1,500 donation.
End-of-semester ice cream socials and treasure box trips are just a sampling of what Julie Lawson, Kate Sullivan Principal, plans to roll out to encourage the students to treat others with kindness and take ownership of their actions. “I call this program our great equalizer because every student can make positive choices in their behavior and get rewarded as a result.”
It’s commonly known positive reinforcement increases the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated, and it supports a student’s positive deeds and qualities through enthusiasm. Kate Sullivan Elementary is one of the most historic elementary schools in Leon County, opening in 1948 in a four-room barracks located west of the present school campus.
“I’m proud of what Principal Lawson is doing at Kate Sullivan Elementary,” says, Rocky Hanna, Leon County Schools Superintendent. “The program encourages our students to do what’s right, be kind, and ultimately be a good person.”
Scott & Wallace have been long-time supporters of Leon County Schools, sponsoring the J. Michael Conley Elementary School Food Pantry for four consecutive years, sponsoring the Principal of the Month Award, the Taylor Moseley Memorial Scholarship at Lincoln High School, and now Kate Sullivan Elementary Positive Behavior Support Program.
“We grew up with educators as parents and mentors and were fortunate to see first-hand how much they give to students on a day-to-day. It’s an honor and privilege to support Leon County Schools,” says Clint Wallace, Partner of Scott & Wallace.
