According to a federal government report “Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation in the United States and its Regions and States: An Update National Report from the National Survey on Recreation and the Environment (NSRE),” more than three quarters of a million off road vehicles (OHVs) vehicles were sold in 2003, and as of 2003 there were more than 5 million all terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the United States.

According to a U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission report, as of December 31, 2013, Consumer Product Safety Commission staff received reports of 11,001 ATV-related fatalities occurring between 1982 and 2010.  Approximately one quarter of these fatalities were of children younger than 16 ears of age.  Of these, nearly half were younger than 12 years of age.  In 2010 alone there were an estimated 115,000 ATV-related emergency department-treated injuries in the United States.  About a quarter of these involved children younger than 16 years of age.  Children younger than 12 years of age represent 14,100 of the ATV-related emergency department-treated injuries in 2010, which constitutes 12 percent of the total number of estimated injuries.
